Santa Maria di Lourdes stands in northern Milan, near the Monumental Cemetery, as a Catholic church of the Ambrosian rite. Its basilica plan gives the church a long central space. Alfredo Campanini designed the building in a Liberty and eclectic style during the late nineteenth century. Construction continued into the early twentieth century. The exterior presents a large grotto inspired by Lourdes, set before a facade of stone and exposed brick. Stained glass fills the space above the central portal. The windows show the Immaculate Madonna with Saints Ambrogio and Carlo Borromeo. Inside, columns and full arches divide the central nave from the side aisles. High windows illuminate frescoes showing a procession of Milanese bishops. Marco Martinengo designed the dome, while Ferdinando Compagnoni supplied its frescoed decoration. The elevated presbytery and transept lead towards chapels dedicated to the Sacred Heart and Saint Joseph. A mosaic in the apse depicts Mary’s Coronation among angels and saints. The side aisles contain altars to the Madonna of Pompei and Saint Anne, plus a painting by Lazzaro Pasini. Giuseppe Calori designed the bell tower beside the sacristy. It carries monofore openings, a clock, and bells.
