In Milan, Palazzo di Brera rises as an austere architectural complex built over a Fourteenth-century Umiliati monastery. Francesco Maria Richini reshaped it in the early Seventeenth century. You enter the Cortile d’Onore, where a monumental staircase leads towards the Pinacoteca di Brera. Wheelchair access supports visits through the complex.

After the Jesuits were disbanded in 1773, Empress Maria Theresa assigned the building several institutions. They included the Accademia di Belle Arti and Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense. The Istituto Lombardo di Scienze e Lettere also joined this concentration of artistic and scholarly life. Learning and culture still shape these rooms.

In the courtyard, Antonio Canova’s bronze Napoleon appears as Mars the Peacemaker, completed in 1859. Cesare Beccaria and Giuseppe Parini appear in monuments beside the grand staircase.
