Galleria d'Arte Moderna stands within Villa Reale in Milan, combining a neoclassical setting with modern art. Villa Reale provides its architectural setting.

Austrian architect Leopoldo Pollack designed the villa as the residence of Count Ludovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso. The building became a gallery.

Milan’s collection began with the city’s decision to consolidate its growing artworks, later finding a permanent home in Villa Reale. The villa complements the collection.

The Collezione dell’Ottocento includes sculptures by Pompeo Marchesi, while the Vismara and Grassi collections add paintings and oriental art. Andrea Appiani and Francesco Hayez appear among the Italian artists.

Giovanni Segantini shares the gallery’s artistic range with Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne and Pablo Picasso. Sculptures occupy the ground floor.

The rooms place nineteenth- and twentieth-century art beside the architecture of a Milanese neoclassical villa. Each gallery connects artworks with Villa Reale’s historic interiors.
