Duomo di Milano rises in the heart of Milan as a Gothic cathedral built from pale Candoglia marble. Its forest of spires and statues dominates the city, with the golden Madonnina shining at the highest point.

Construction began in 1386 under Gian Galeazzo Visconti and continued for centuries, combining late Gothic ideas with French, German and Lombard craftsmanship. Napoleon Bonaparte ordered the facade’s completion in the early nineteenth century, while restorations followed damage during the Second World War.

Inside, five naves lead beneath high vaulted ceilings, intricate stonework and stained-glass windows, including panels dating from the fifteenth century. The altar, consecrated in 1418, stands beside the apse and transepts, and wheelchair access makes the cathedral easier to experience.
