Civico Planetario Ulrico Hoepli stands in the gardens of Porta Venezia, Milan, with an octagonal form and an Ionic portico. Piero Portaluppi designed the building, which opened in 1930 after Ulrico Hoepli donated it to the city. Its dome spans about 20 metres, making it Italy’s largest planetarium.

Inside, a Zeiss Model IV projector installed in 1968 recreates the movements of the night sky. Astronomy education brings school groups and enthusiasts beneath the aluminium-panelled dome. Bomb damage and a wartime closure once interrupted its work, but careful restoration replaced the original fabric lining.

A library connected with the Natural History Museum offers further resources about the cosmos. The interior’s virtual north points towards the entrance rather than true north, helping presenters show the southern celestial sphere. That unusual orientation gives each presentation a distinctive view of the sky.
