Chiesa di Sant'Ambrogio ad Nemus stands near the Arco della Pace in Milan, combining a modern appearance with ancient history. Its setting recalls the forest once associated with Milan’s Latin nemus. Saint Ambrose reportedly withdrew there to meditate and compose verses. An adjoining convent connected the church to Milan’s earliest monastic history. Saint Martin of Tours allegedly found refuge there after expulsion from Milan. Paulinus of Périgueux recorded that tradition in the fifth century.

Later, renovations made the church a basilica, while Ludovico Sforza ordered further changes. A collapsed ceiling brought major restoration in the seventeenth century. The Order of Saints Barnabas and Ambrose ad Nemus carried out that work. French forces later occupied and desecrated the church, turning it into a warehouse. The Pala Sforzesca survived and is preserved in the Pinacoteca di Brera. Nineteenth-century work by the Fatebenesorelle revived and expanded the building. Don Luigi Guanella then shaped it as a place of charity. Its Roman basilica plan still joins a nave to an apse.
