Chiesa di San Bernardino alle Ossa stands in Piazza Santo Stefano, within Milan’s historic centre. Its sober façade resembles a civil building, divided by strong vertical and horizontal lines. Statues of San Bernardino and San Sebastiano complete Andrea Biffi’s design from 1679.

Inside, an octagonal plan gathers baroque marble altars beneath an octagonal dome. Two side chapels contain a painting by Federico Ferrario and works dedicated to Santa Rosalia. A narrow corridor leads to the ossuary chapel, where skulls and bones form intricate decorative patterns. Sebastiano Ricci’s ceiling fresco adds colour above this striking arrangement.

The complex grew from a cemetery and bone chamber associated with the Ospedale di San Barnaba in Brolo. A church nearby appeared in 1269, and the Disciplini later dedicated it to San Bernardino da Siena. After the Santo Stefano bell tower collapsed onto the complex in 1642, Carlo Buzzi and Gerolamo Quadrio rebuilt it. A fire led to another reconstruction in the early nineteenth century, while the Disciplini crypt was discovered in 1931.
