The Anfiteatro Romano occupies a site near Porta Ticinese in Milan, where remnants mark a Roman amphitheatre outside the ancient city walls. Milan was then known as Mediolanum, a rising Roman city.

Built in the first century AD, the elliptical arena measured 155 by 125 metres, making it the third largest in Roman Italy. Gladiators fought here, and flooded spectacles recreated naval battles. Its facade combined Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian orders, while a retractable velarium shaded spectators. The Gothic War destroyed the structure, leaving stones for later buildings. Those stones later entered buildings such as the Basilica of San Lorenzo, while the archaeological park and Antiquarium preserve surviving structures.
