Wandelhalle stretches almost one hundred metres beside the Passer in Meran, forming a covered arcade along the winter promenade. Delicate cast iron shapes its arches. Built between 1864 and 1866, the structure links late Biedermeier classicism with the decorative Jugendstil that followed. A Viennese foundry named Griedel produced the framework, whose forms recall early Paris Métro stations and Otto Wagner’s urban railways.

The riverside arcade began as a project to attract spa guests, despite earlier opposition from people who washed clothes there. By 1891, it had become an open-air gallery displaying busts, commemorative plaques and South Tyrolean landscape paintings. Works by Franz Lenhart, Rudolf Complojer and Peter Demetz show villages and countryside, while a central hall of honour includes a bust of Duke Karl Theodor.

Today, the car-free promenade offers river views, a café and a Saturday flea market for collectors and walkers. Kurpromenade and Tappeiner Promenade begin nearby, while children find shade beneath a large entrance tree and play with small cars and bicycles. In summer, the iron canopy gives you cool shade beside the river, and in winter, sunlight reaches the walkway.
