Les Colombières is a hillside villa in Menton, France, where Mediterranean architecture, painted interiors and layered gardens meet. Built in 1790, it took its present form after Ferdinand Bac began reshaping the house and grounds around 1918.

The three-storey villa covers about 800 square metres, with red-and-yellow façades, Bac’s frescoes and modernist furniture. Idealised scenes evoke Greece, Turkey, Italy and Morocco, while the Venetian Room adds a carnival scene, Murano glass chandelier and gondola lights. The private house overlooks gardens covering about three hectares, arranged around cypresses, pavilions, colonnades, bridges and enclosed spaces. Homer’s Odyssey appears in Nausicaa’s fountain, a garden linked to Ulysses and a head of Medusa, while the hillside opens towards Menton’s bay and old town. Guided visits include the gardens and patio, and the estate has been a protected French historic monument since 1991.

One detail anchors the design: a six-hundred-year-old carob tree stands at the centre of an avenue lined with large olive jars. Twelve small buildings lead visitors along the steep, uneven paths, while a mausoleum on a rock holds Bac, Émile and Caroline Ladan-Bockairy above the garden.
