Haus der Kramerzunft in Memmingen preserves a documented chapter of European history connected with the Kramer guild and the German Peasants’ War. Merchants of the Kramer guild originally owned the building.

During the German Peasants’ War, Upper Swabian peasants met here to develop the Twelve Articles, a programme demanding freedom and participation. The Twelve Articles linked these demands to the Gospel and divine rights. At the house, the representatives also debated negotiation and armed resistance before forming a Christian Union with the Bundesordnung as its principles. The Swabian League later defeated the peasants militarily.

Despite that defeat, the Twelve Articles circulated widely across the empire and left a mark on discussions of freedom and human rights. Memmingen honours this legacy through its Memminger Freedom Prize for advocacy. The prize recognises people who advocate freedom, justice and human dignity through their public commitment. The district craftsmen’s association cares for the building.
