Schlosskapelle Marburg stands at the eastern end of the High Castle within Marburg’s Landgrave’s Castle. Its enclosed exterior gives little sense of the colourful medieval space inside. Consecrated to Saint Catherine in 1288, the chapel belongs to the early Gothic architecture of the castle complex. Its double-chapel design has no connection with the lower floor.

A ribbed vault draws your gaze upwards, while trapezoidal niches on the north and south hold images of saints. Decorated windows, gilded capitals and a colourful terracotta-tile floor enrich the compact interior. The chapel served chiefly the prince and his family, rather than large public religious celebrations. Above the castle gate, the sacristy also forms a passage towards the north wing. The western niche contains a huge mural of Saint Christopher crossing a river with the adult Christ on his shoulder, surrounded by fish and fantastic creatures.
