Landgrafenschloss Marburg crowns Marburg above the old town, combining a former fortress, residence, museum, and viewpoint. Stone walls rise above the rooftops of Marburg’s old town. The oldest parts date from the late tenth or early eleventh century, when the site served chiefly as a defensive stronghold. Later, landgraves used it as a residence.

In the thirteenth century, Landgrave Henry I expanded the fortress, adding the castle chapel and Fürstensaal. The castle chapel received its consecration in 1288. Medieval frescoes and coloured decoration reveal early Gothic design, while the Fürstensaal used immense scale to display princely authority. Renaissance building followed under Philip the Magnanimous.

In 1529, Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon, Ulrich Zwingli, and other reformers met here for the Marburg Colloquy. They debated the meaning of bread and wine in communion. Later, the complex served as a residence, fortress, prison, and state archive before housing part of the university museum. The museum covers urban history, the castle’s development, and mineralogy. Fritz Budde’s 1927 park stage adds three Gothic arches of steel and concrete for theatre, concerts, and cinema.
