# Kungsparken

Kungsparken is the city's oldest public park, shaped on former fortress land after its military role ended. King Oscar II ordered its creation in 1872. Danish landscape architect Ove Høegh Hansen arranged the grounds as an English garden with lawns, winding paths and grouped shrubs. The layout opens changing views between lawns, trees and ponds. A cast-iron fountain from 1882 stands at the park's heart, where water and ironwork catch the light. A small artificial cave lies north of the fountain.

The park's trees come from three continents and include mature local specimens, exotic plantings and younger additions. Birds move through branches above benches, lawns and water. The former park restaurant occupies the southern building, restored in 2001 and now home to casino Cosmopol. The old fortress site gives Kungsparken a clear connection with the city's earlier landscape. Mature trunks filter daylight across paths, ponds and grass. Together, the fountain, cave, trees and former restaurant place several layers of city history within one green setting.
