Daniaparken is a coastal park on Sweden’s Öresund shore, where a flat boulder beach meets an open horizon. Three broad concrete ramps descend through the rocks towards the water. Long light, steady wind and sea shape the setting more strongly than planted shelter or enclosure. Every route, platform and bench faces the coast.

The site began as a contaminated landfill and industrial no-man’s-land before the park reclaimed its shoreline. Thorbjörn Andersson and Sweco shaped the transformation. The scheme opened in 2001 and uses concrete, wood, grass and salt-tolerant planting. A forty-by-forty-metre bastion rises about six metres above the sea. Three wooden balconies project over a slightly sunken lawn behind two rows of Swedish whitebeam trees. This arrangement leaves the park exposed to weather.

At the shoreline, the inclined slabs called the scouts provide a direct, tactile descent. Their raw horizontal surfaces echo the scale of the coast. From the raised table, the balconies look across grass, boulders and water. The strongest detail is the meeting of wind, concrete and waves at the ramp’s edge.
