Fuente de la Olla stands in a gardened area in Málaga, where its hexagonal shaft supports a classical-inspired crátera, or large vase. José María de Sancha designed this public fountain in the late nineteenth century, when the city faced severe water scarcity.

Málaga’s council approved Sancha’s plan for thirty-nine public fountains in June 1878, after water from the Torremolinos springs offered temporary relief in 1876. Originally, the structure had no basin, only outlets for draining excess water, with flat supports for water jugs and spouts shaped like mascarons. Restoration followed Sancha’s drawings and old photographs, preserving those distinctive faces.

The fountain first stood in La Malagueta before moving to the central Plaza del Carbón. Two related fountains remain in Málaga, including one at Plaza de Montes in Trinidad and another in El Palo.
