Castillo de Gibralfaro rises on a hill 132 metres above sea level in Málaga, overlooking the city and the Mediterranean coast. Its position made the fortress a watchtower within a larger defensive landscape.

Yusuf I commissioned the stronghold in the fourteenth century, linking it with the Alcazaba through the fortified Coracha walkway. Irregular walls follow the hill’s natural shape and combine rammed earth, local shale and lime mortar. Two enclosed areas form the fortress, with the outer barbican carrying a battlemented wall walk. The Torre Blanca stands outside the main enclosure, served as a prison, and connects through an albarrana fortification. The southeast Torre Mayor reaches 17 metres and commands views across the surrounding area.

Cisterns, storerooms and garrison rooms supported prolonged stays inside the walls. A former mosque later became a chapel dedicated to Saint Louis, while French forces partly damaged the site during the Spanish War of Independence. The interpretation centre occupies the former gunpowder magazine and explains the fortress’s military history. The Airón Well reaches more than 40 metres below the ground, leaving one of the site’s most striking details.
