Antiguo Mercado de Mayoristas stands near Málaga’s Guadalmedina River, with a trapezoidal, almost triangular plan shaped by its site. Luis Gutiérrez Soto designed the rationalist building during the late 1930s, and concrete lines define its strong horizontal form. A distinctive tower rises above the roof, while small square vents and vertical windows mark the façade.

Completed in 1944, the structure first served as a wholesale market commissioned during the Spanish Civil War. Its basement contained water storage, air-raid shelters and cold rooms, with ramps allowing lorries to reach the building. Market stalls once occupied polygonal sections around a raised central hall, alongside offices, a restaurant and a decorative fountain. After disuse in the 1980s, restoration preserved the original façade and adapted the interior for contemporary art.

Since 2003, the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga has filled the former market with exhibitions, conferences and visitor facilities. The basement now contains offices, a reading room and storage, while the ground floor includes a bookshop, café and exhibition space. The tower and most of the roof remain largely unchanged, with the former Francoist coat of arms preserved behind panels.
