St. Georg stands in Mainz Bretzenheim as a church whose present form carries layers of medieval and later architecture. Its tower, nave, choir, onion dome, entrance hall, and sacristy shape the building visitors see today.

An earlier church dedicated to Salvator stood here and first appeared in a document from 775. Landowner Ada then bequeathed the church to Fulda monastery, following the early medieval tradition of private estate churches. A Frankish burial ground discovered in 1907 probably influenced the site, while the tower’s ground floor once served as the choir. During the high Middle Ages, the dedication changed to St. Georg, and Archbishop Konrad granted patronage to Mainz’s St. Stephan chapter in 1189.

The community funded the nave of a new church, while St. Stephan chapter financed the choir. Consecration followed in 1722, but French troops set the building alight during the Revolutionary Wars in 1793. Reconstruction continued for fifteen years and incorporated furnishings from Dalheim monastery, while the tower received its onion dome in 1896. Renovation in 1963 added the entrance hall and sacristy, leaving the onion-capped tower as a distinctive detail above Bretzenheim.
