# St. Emmeran

St. Emmeran stands in Mainz as a historic church where Romanesque and Gothic forms meet within one architectural setting. Its story reaches back to the eighth century. Founded beside an important Roman road, the site developed through medieval rebuilding and later changes. The surviving tower dates from around 1100.

Romanesque masonry preserves narrow loopholes below and paired windows with central columns on the third floor. A Gothic renovation began there in 1296, reshaping the medieval structure. An early eighteenth-century bell story once carried a hood and lantern. Bombing during the Second World War destroyed the choir stalls, pews, baptismal font, organ, and much of the vaulted ceiling.

After the ruins were reinforced with concrete and aluminium between 1978 and 1981, the nave gained a striking modern interior frame. The tower now ends in a simple pyramid roof, added after its Baroque superstructure disappeared. The building serves Mainz’s Italian parish within the Diocese of Mainz. Its dedication honours Saint Emmeram of Regensburg, whose feast falls on 26 September in this region.
