The Gautor stands in Mainz as an architectural landmark connected with the city’s former defensive system. It once formed one of Mainz’s main entrances. Builders created the gate in the seventeenth century as part of the fortress ring surrounding Mainz. Red sandstone gives the façade its baroque character. Decorative sculpture presents Saint Martin on horseback, sharing his cloak with two beggars. This scene remains a central feature of the design.
