Drususstein stands on the grounds of Mainz Citadel as a masonry block from the Roman era, linked to the city’s ancient past. Marble once covered the surface of this substantial monument.

It is widely regarded as the cenotaph of Roman general Drusus, erected by Roman troops. Drusus was a Roman general and stepson of Emperor Augustus.

His memorial connected Mogontiacum, the Roman name for Mainz, with ceremonies and the imperial cult. A procession road once led towards the theatre of Mogontiacum.

The theatre formed part of ceremonies commemorating Drusus and stood within the Roman city’s ceremonial landscape. Drususstein later entered Mainz’s fortifications as a watchtower.

A staircase and doorframe changed the solid block into a practical element of the city’s defences. Its marble casing disappeared before those watchtower alterations reshaped its appearance.

Drususstein remains in its original location within Mainz. It preserves a visible connection with Roman Mogontiacum alongside aqueduct pillars and the theatre stage.

The exact origins of Drususstein remain a subject of debate. Its place in Mainz’s Roman heritage remains clear through the monument’s stonework and setting.
