Augustinerkirche rises above Mainz’s old town with a powerful, towerless Baroque façade. Augustinian hermits built the church between 1768 and 1771 on the site of a Gothic predecessor dating to 1260.

A sculpture above the entrance shows Mary’s coronation, flanked by Augustine of Hippo and his mother Monica. Inside, the nave and choir flow together beneath Rococo altars and ceiling paintings completed by Johann Baptist Enderle in 1772. A 1420 sculpture of Mary came from the demolished Liebfrauenkirche in 1807, adding a medieval presence to the later interior. The church became part of Mainz’s Catholic theological seminary after the monastery’s secularization in 1803.

The preserved Stumm organ has stood here in its original form since 1773. Its 31 stops span two manuals and a pedal, with mechanical key and stop actions.
