Wasserturm Salbke stands in Magdeburg as a former railway water tower and architectural landmark. Its multicoloured brick walls carry distinctive sandstone details. Built for the Royal Railway Workshop, the tower supplied water to an important industrial complex. Behrendt designed the tower and its machine house. A riveted iron dome covers the tower, while a riveted double container followed the Intze principle. Narrow arched openings crown the tower’s upper structure. The four-storey shaft tapers upwards and includes arrow-slit-like openings, a former laboratory, and an iron-removal installation. Sandstone cornices and spherical crowns mark the ground floor. The ground floor retains equipment for reducing iron in water. The surrounding Turmpark preserves traces of railway training, leisure facilities, and a former outdoor swimming pool. Renovation gave the tower a new roof and foldable windows. The restored site combines industrial history, cultural use, and an observation tower within Magdeburg. Wasserturm Salbke connects engineering, brickwork, and civic reuse.
