Speicher GHI stands in Magdeburg’s harbour area, within Alte Neustadt, between railway lines and the waterfront. The six-storey building forms the northern end of a larger storage complex. Constructed in 1889 and 1890, it presents a two-tone brick facade with paired segmental-arch windows and coloured pilasters. A hipped roof caps the structure, whose upper floors each carry six portal gables.

Government architects Brosche and Büttner designed the site for bagged goods and bulk grain. Its riveted steel skeleton sits within solid walls, while timber beams and double wooden planking form the floors. Each floor provides 650 square metres of gross area, and the wider complex contains 10,800 square metres of usable space. The planned load reached 1,500 kilograms per square metre, with capacity for 8,000 to 10,000 tonnes of grain. Grain storage ended around the late 1980s because loading and unloading demanded substantial technical and staffing resources.

Handling equipment included elevators and conveyors, plus a wooden sack chute added to the building. A ship elevator in Speicher I moved 40 tonnes per hour. Silo West was built beside it from 1935 to 1938 and held up to 20,000 tonnes of grain. Together with surrounding structures, the building is listed as a cultural monument. The dormer above the gables housed crane lifts.
