Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, completed in 1894 after a public design competition. Two towers rise above the River Thames together.

Its steel framework weighs over 11,000 tons and carries high-level walkways clad in Cornish granite and Portland stone. The high-level walkways connect the two towers.

Its bascules lift like giant seesaws, allowing ships to pass beneath the bridge and revealing its engineering purpose. The original lifting system used steam-powered hydraulics.

Six accumulators stored energy, while the bascules reached an angle of 86 degrees within sixty seconds. The bridge has used oil and electricity since 1976.

Visitors can explore Victorian engine rooms, original machinery, and exhibitions about construction, engineers, workers, and the surrounding area. Glass floors offer views of traffic and river life below the elevated paths.

Tower Bridge also preserves details from London history, including a 1952 bus incident and its Olympic rings in 2012. Tower Bridge remains distinct from London Bridge.
