11 Downing Street stands in London as part of a terrace built by Sir George Downing in the late seventeenth century. Westminster Abbey and the former Whitehall Palace place it within a historic political district. The house serves as the residence and workplace of the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Lord Henry Petty first lived here as chancellor in 1806 and 1807, while official residence status followed in 1828. Sir John Soane reshaped the interiors around 1825, giving the state dining room oak panelling, vaulted forms, and overhead lighting. A sitting room supports informal meetings, while the adjoining study surrounds the red budget box with Gladstone and Disraeli porcelain caricatures. The state drawing room spans the house, with tall windows, marble fireplaces, Chinese cabinets, and views towards shared gardens and St James’s Park.

A staircase lined with political cartoons and engravings traces the office through its former chancellors. Raymond Erith restored the building in the 1960s after postwar reconstruction had repaired bombing damage. The front door became a familiar budget-day setting when the chancellor raises the Gladstone box, a tradition dating from the 1860s.
