Turm 20 (Cäcilia) is a surviving tower of the Maximilianische Turmlinie, the historic defensive ring around Linz. The fortification protected Linz through separate, mutually supporting towers. Its planners built the towers as robust structures with concentric stone walls, brick vaults, underground rooms, ditches, and earthworks. A rear drawbridge once led into the tower. The towers carried female saints’ names alongside numbers, linking military design with a formal naming system. Turm 20, called Cäcilia, remains among Linz’s surviving towers.

The former military building now provides a setting for theatre, concerts, readings, music cabaret, and other cultural gatherings. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has featured among its theatre performances. Thick stone walls and historic construction give these performances and concerts a distinctive architectural backdrop in Linz. The venue connects fortification history with present cultural life. Its preserved character shows how a defensive structure can support new uses while retaining visible links to Linz’s past. The tower remains part of Linz’s architectural story.
