The Musikschule der Stadt Linz occupies the Prunerstift, a Baroque building whose history reaches back to the eighteenth century. Johann Adam Pruner founded this charitable institution for Linz.

Construction began in 1737 on the site of Egereck Castle, and the building was completed in 1739. The foundation supported orphans and people in need.

Over time, the two-storey structure became a hospital, maternity home, mental health institution, rental house and day centre for older people. Since 1979, the building has housed Linz’s city music school.

The Prunerstiftskirche forms the middle wing, with a ceiling fresco, three altar paintings and eight wooden angels from its construction period. Martino Altomonte painted the main altar fresco.

The street-facing façade carries a granite Baroque portal with a coat of arms and two angels holding a five-pointed baron’s crown. Three wings create two enclosed inner courtyards.

The former foundation remains a distinctive architectural record of Linz’s social history, combining charitable origins, religious art and music education.
