Die Schlange is a large-scale sculpture by Mathias Goeritz beside the Danube in Linz. Its abstract form rises within Forum Metall, an open-air park of modern sculptures.

Goeritz realized the work in 1986 from an earlier design dating to 1953. He described its shape as a combination of a fever curve and pre-Hispanic themes. That pairing reflects his interest in abstract forms, cultural references and emotional architecture. The artist, born in Danzig in 1915, later became an important figure in Mexico’s art scene.

Forum Metall began in 1977, bringing together artists from seven nations for works made specifically for Linz. Austrian workshops constructed the sculptures under the artists’ supervision or direct involvement. Herbert Bayer, Max Bill, Donald Judd and Eduardo Paolozzi contributed other works to the riverside collection. Die Schlange remains among the permanent installations that connect Linz’s industrial heritage with its public art.
