Glasmagazin stands opposite the historic glassworks in Schmidsfelden, a glassmaking village near Leutkirch im Allgäu. Around ten houses, workers’ homes, a rococo chapel and the Oberhaus surround this preserved industrial setting.

Inside the dim attic, shelves hold bottles, drinking glasses, medicine vials and large vessels from different periods and regions. A small natural history section connects these objects with Allgäu forests and rivers, which supplied quartz, lime and wood for the furnaces. Glassmaking began here after the Thirty Years’ War, flourished through the nineteenth century and ended when better-connected regions brought stronger competition.

Across the village, demonstrations show artisans shaping molten glass, while supervised workshops let children and adults make glass spheres. One special goblet, created for a royal visit in the nineteenth century, adds a memorable detail to the everyday bottles and glasses.
