Zentral-Messepalast stands at the corner of Grimmaische Straße and Neumarkt in Leipzig’s city centre.

Würzburg shell limestone covers its protected facade. Five storeys, three wings, and a round atrium fourteen metres wide shape the complex. Fifteen window axes face Neumarkt, while eight face Grimmaische Straße.

Emil Franz Hänsel built the original reinforced-concrete trade-fair house between 1912 and 1914, with Bruno Wollstädter creating its sculptural decoration. An air raid burned it out in 1943. Reopening followed in 1946 and 1947, when 4,700 square metres displayed paper, packaging, office supplies, and printing products. Restoration later revived the roof and facade.

Later rebuilding preserved the historic facades while glass fronts filled the gaps and connected the former Messehaus Monopol. Shops and the Zeitgeschichtliches Forum occupy the complex. Wolfgang Mattheuer’s Jahrhundertschritt stands before the museum entrance at Grimmaische Straße 6, while number 8 contains a thirteen-metre climbing wall. A lion carries a putto above the three-storey volute gable.
