Schauspiel Leipzig is a municipal theatre in Leipzig, centred on the Schauspielhaus since 1957. Its neoclassical façade reflects postwar reconstruction and stands as a protected monument.

The theatre’s story reaches back to the Comödienhaus, opened in 1766 under Heinrich Gottfried Koch. Leipzig’s stages hosted major works by Schiller and Brecht. Bombing destroyed the Alte Theater, Neue Theater and Schauspielhaus in December 1943. The restored Centraltheater reopened in 1945 with Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, before the present building emerged between 1954 and 1957.

Several spaces now support drama, experimental formats and interdisciplinary work. The Hinterbühne brings performers and audiences close, while the Diskothek gives young authors room to develop their work. The Residenz at Baumwollspinnerei connects theatre with artists working across disciplines. Audio descriptions, tactile guidance and sign-language performances make the building more accessible. A particularly memorable detail is the theatre’s summer use of places such as Gohliser Schlösschen and Leipzig Zoo.
