Peterskirche is an evangelical Lutheran parish church in Leipzig, standing south of the historic city centre. Its Gothic Revival façade combines pointed windows, stained glass and a large western portal. The 88-metre tower rises as Leipzig’s tallest church tower, marking the southern skyline.

The present building rose between 1882 and 1885, after architects August Hartel and Constantin Lipsius won a design competition. It replaced an earlier church from 1507, built beside an old city gate and the city wall. After the Reformation, that predecessor served as storage and a barracks before worship resumed in 1712. Bombing during the Second World War destroyed the roof, while restoration campaigns in the 1970s, 1990s and 2000s shaped its present appearance.

Inside, the hall-church layout keeps the nave and aisles at similar heights, creating a broad, open space. French cathedral Gothic influences add another layer to the German architectural tradition. Worship shares the building with concerts, choirs, organ performances and community events. Wheelchair access makes the spacious interior easier to experience, while surviving marks of wartime damage keep its difficult history visible.
