# Altes Rathaus

The Altes Rathaus stands on Leipzig’s Market Square as a major secular building of the German Renaissance. The present structure dates mainly from the year 1556.

Its two storeys extend about 93 metres, beneath a steep roof with six dormers facing the market and seven facing Naschmarkt. An octagonal stair tower marks the main entrance.

Rochlitz porphyry, ochre plaster, Ionic columns, and carved Gaffköpfe shape the building’s visible character. The narrow sides carry high, staggered gables.

Inside, the ceremonial hall, council chamber, treasury, and late Baroque landscape room record the building’s civic history. A Leipzig model from 1823 adds another detail.

The former town hall also preserves Hans Krell’s portraits of Saxon princes and an inscription from 1672. The inscription runs around the building in a continuous band.

The building served Leipzig’s council, courts, archives, and cellar prison before becoming a city history museum after renovations in the early twentieth century. An air raid in the Second World War destroyed the roof.

Reconstruction from 1946 to 1950 restored one of Leipzig’s first public buildings after the war. The spot is recorded as wheelchair accessible.
