ACQUA Klinik occupies a protected historic city villa in Leipzig’s Bachviertel, beside the reopened Elstermühlgraben. The building presents late nineteenth-century craftsmanship in its exterior and surviving interior features. Built in 1874 and 1875 for travel-book publisher Fritz Baedeker, it followed plans by city building director Julius Hoffmann. Architect Bruno Eelbo remodelled it in 1901.

The villa served the Baedeker publishing business after wartime destruction, then became the Georg Schumann youth hostel in 1953. That hostel use continued until 1998. Since 2009, the building has combined specialised surgery with the International Reference and Development Centre for Surgical Technology, led by physician Gero Strauss. Medical work includes allergy tests, endoscopies, hearing tests, CT and MRI imaging, acupuncture, speech therapy, laser treatments, and ear, nose, and throat operations.

Research here examines surgical workflows, instrument-table layouts, and operating-room standards. Simulation systems train nurses and surgeons while supporting safer, more efficient procedures. The rear façade meets the waterway, linking Leipzig’s publishing history and architectural heritage with contemporary medical research.
