Vegueta is the city’s original quarter, with cobbled lanes and historic buildings. Its facades combine neoclassical fronts with colourful colonial balconies.

Plaza de Santa Ana forms the civic centre, framed by Santa Ana Cathedral, the episcopal palace and Casas Consistoriales. Green cast-iron dogs mark the square around Plaza de Santa Ana.

The cathedral brings together Gothic interiors and a neoclassical exterior, while its south tower overlooks rooftops and the harbour. An elevator reaches the viewpoint near the cathedral summit.

Nearby, Casa de Colón connects a colonial mansion with early Atlantic voyages and island governors. The Museo Canario preserves archaeological collections about the island’s Indigenous peoples.

Quiet spaces include Espíritu Santo, where a covered stone fountain stands beside a dragon tree and an araucaria. Cultural venues include the Gabinete Literario, Pérez Galdós Theatre and Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno.

Vegueta was protected as a historic-artistic ensemble in 1973. Carved lintels, bell towers and shaded plazas reveal the quarter’s maritime connections. Old stone walls retain the quarter’s compact scale.
