Plaza de España presents a broad, uneven surface that resembles a landscape more than a conventional urban square. Herzog & de Meuron designed it. The upper level links the old city with the marina through slopes, hollows, and flat sections shaped like an artificial lava flow or beach. Traffic moves below. Its two levels separate movement from lingering. Small pavilions nestle into the paved crust, offering cafés, shelters, meeting places, and storage for large city celebrations. Each pavilion has a different, shell-like or cave-like form. At the centre, a shallow circular basin catches the light and holds a fountain above the foundations of an older fortification. Old walls remain beneath the basin. Buildings from different periods surround the water, including a government building, a bank, and a sombre monument linked to a difficult chapter of history. Together, the water, pavilions, buildings, and uneven paving make Plaza de España a meeting place between the city and the sea.
