Monumento a la Vela Latina stands on Avenida Marítima, beside Calle Bravo Murillo, facing the regatta course. Juan Antonio Giraldo created this public sculpture beside the waterfront promenade and open sea.

The work honours the vela latina canaria, sailed in small botes with one large sail. From the late nineteenth century, these boats carried passengers and goods between anchored ships and the shore. Competition among the boteros gradually became organised racing on the bay. The city’s first documented regatta took place on 24 July 1904 during the San Cristóbal patronal celebrations. Giraldo connects that working harbour tradition with the maritime heritage still visible around the course.

From the promenade, the sculpture shares the horizon with the water where those races unfold. A short walk brings together Calle Bravo Murillo, the regatta field, and a memory of boats once serving anchored ships.
