Casa de Colón is a colonial-style architectural complex in Spain, arranged around quiet courtyards and covered arcades. The residence once belonged to the islands’ first governors. During Atlantic crossings, it served as a stopping place for Christopher Columbus. Today, a museum in the complex examines the islands’ role in the discovery of America. Thirteen exhibition rooms connect pre-Columbian cultures with ocean crossings and historical ties between the Atlantic and the New World.

Paintings from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries hang on the walls, alongside loans from the Prado. A specialist library covers American history and Atlantic connections. The institution hosts colloquia, seminars and conferences, while awarding prizes for historical research. A mid-twentieth-century restoration reshaped the complex under an architect’s direction. Its museum facilities are wheelchair accessible for visitors.

The courtyards place the collections inside the building’s own history. Look into one, where masonry, shadow and light reveal the site’s layered past.
