Schloss Pöring stands in northern Pitzling, a district of Landsberg am Lech, with Gothic features and nineteenth-century Neo-Gothic restoration. The castle began in the ninth or tenth century. Wessobrunn Monastery once held the property, which later passed to the von Peringen and von Holdingen families. A fifteenth-century Marian statue shaped Pöring’s religious history. From 1731, the statue helped establish Pöring as a pilgrimage destination, transforming the castle’s small chapel into a larger church. The church bears the name Maria von der Versöhnung. Built between 1764 and 1766, Schlosskirche Pöring contains stucco and mural work by Dominikus Zimmermann, who also simplified its design. Large pilgrim gatherings influenced the church’s interior. Nearby, St Johann Baptist in Pitzling preserves grave plaques connected with noble families who lived at Schloss Pöring. The plaques remain inside and outside the parish church.
