# St. Johannis

St. Johannis is a fieldstone church in Germany, with a low body beside a wooden bell tower. Its rough walls meet a weathered timber tower. The tower keeps its present form from 1680, although an earlier wooden tower stood here before 1500. The building is the town’s oldest survivor.

Commissioned for the nuns of Parchow in 1220, the small church gained a Gothic choir and vault around 1400. That addition gives the interior a taller, more intimate light. Five carved figures, made by Bernhard Lübbers in 1707, stand beneath forty-two Baroque glass panels in the choir. The richly carved wooden pulpit dates from 1698.

The Eule organ itself dates from 1963. Renovation in 2011 and 2012 moved it from the west gallery to the south gallery, opening the sound. An acrylic cross by Gerd Frick accompanies the simple altar and lectern. Since March 2012, the church also serves as the region’s first bicycle-route church. The bronze bell carries the Latin line, “O rex gloriae Christe veni cum pace”.
