# Irrhain

The Irrhain is a nature reserve in the Kraftshofer Forst, within the Nuremberg area of Germany. It remains within the historic Knoblauchland.

The reserve preserves a section of forest in natural form, with standing dead trees providing habitat for insects. That woodland remains beside agricultural land.

An arched Baroque stone entrance leads into a wooded area containing monuments to the Pegnesischer Blumenorden. The Blumenorden was a literary society with Baroque ideals.

Members established the Irrhain as a meeting place, while Martin Limburger shaped its idea as a talking garden. The garden represented the world’s crazy forest.

Memorial stones from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries remain among the trees, including an obelisk for Christoph Martin Wieland. The original labyrinthine design no longer survives at Irrhain.

The site also hosts Irrhainfest, where performances often feature plays by Hans Sachs. Conservation concerns complicate renovation plans for the overgrown site.
