Hippocrates Plane Tree stands at the centre of Plane Tree Square in Kos, a few metres above sea level near the coast. Palm-lined Leoforos ton Finikon runs north toward Neratzia Fortress, while an Italian-built bridge connects the square to its entrance. Around you, the Gazi-Hasan-Pascha Mosque, the former Governor’s Palace, an Ottoman hamam and the ruins of the ancient Agora bring several periods of Kos together.

The square took its present form around 1935, after the 1933 earthquake damaged much of the old city. Its protected Platanus orientalis has a hollow trunk almost five metres wide and more than twelve metres around, with a metal railing supporting its branches. Local tradition links the tree to the place where Hippocrates taught students more than two thousand years ago, although this specimen may be about five hundred years old. Ottoman fountains add another layer, including an ancient sarcophagus converted into a fountain with an Arabic inscription calling the water “the water of Hippocrates”.

Look toward the southwest for the 1786 mosque, with its minaret and marble fountain. The square also witnessed public hangings during the Greek War of Independence, while branches and cuttings from the tree later travelled to medical schools and institutions worldwide.
