Schwedenturm stands on the southwest side of Mainau Island, near Constance and Lake Constance. The slender tower is an architectural landmark within Mainau’s historic setting.

Built in the sixteenth century, it probably served as a watchtower overlooking the mainland from Mainau. A date above the entrance connects the building with 1558.

Its pyramid-shaped roof and wooden cladding come from the nineteenth century, while coats of arms preserve older associations. One visible emblem represents the Teutonic Order here.

Another links the tower with Georg von Gemmingen, a commander of the order on Mainau. The name recalls Swedish troops during the Thirty Years’ War.

The recorded tradition also remembers a single surviving cross, called the Swedish Cross. Gardens, vineyards, the wine trail and the arboretum frame the tower on Mainau.

Its slim profile marks the island’s former defensive landscape. You can trace later changes through the roof, wooden cladding and surviving heraldic details.

The building remains part of Mainau’s historic architectural setting. It connects fortification, Swedish history and nineteenth-century design in one compact landmark.
