Schlosskirche Mainau stands beside the palace on Mainau Island, near Constance, as a Baroque church dedicated to Saint Mary. The Teutonic Order commissioned its construction between 1732 and 1739. Johann Caspar Bagnato planned the building, which was consecrated in December 1739 after its choir vault collapsed during construction. The rebuilt structure includes its roof and tower. Above the portal, a lead-cast bust of Mary by Joseph Anton Feuchtmeyer presents a rare surviving detail. The tower contains a bell cast in Lindau in 1505. Inside, Feuchtmeyer’s high altar, side altars, pulpit and sculptures meet Spiegler’s ceiling frescoes and painting of Mary’s life. Francesco Pozzi’s stucco leads the eye towards the choir. Lively angels adorn the side altars, while Saint Sebastian and Saint John of Nepomuk crown them above. A bronze plaque commemorates Bagnato inside the church. The richly composed interior combines sculpture, painting and stucco, directing attention towards the choir and high altar. Those elements make devotion visible through Baroque design.
