Mehmet Efendi Çeşmesi stands in Istanbul’s Fatih district, within the Küçükayasofya neighbourhood, directly before Küçük Ayasofya Mosque. This Ottoman fountain now sits below the present road level. That sunken position makes the feature harder to see, while the broken front basin shows how the setting has changed. Its water spout is missing, and no water runs from it today.

The exact patron remains unnamed, but the surviving inscription associates the dedication with someone sharing the Prophet’s name. The eighteenth-century Istanbul poet Ahmet composed those words under the pen name Hamdî. That surviving text gives the otherwise unidentified site a human connection within the Ottoman neighbourhood around the mosque. Its damaged basin and absent spout leave the inscription as the clearest detail linking this quiet structure with its original purpose. The lowered position and broken basin remain visible signs of its altered relationship with the street.
