Haseki Hürrem Hamamı stands in central Istanbul, Turkey, between Hagia Sophia and Sultan Ahmed Mosque. Built in 1556, the bathhouse embodies Ottoman architecture through a symmetrical plan with separate men’s and women’s sections. Commissioned by Hürrem Sultan, wife of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, it was designed by architect Sinan.

Alternating layers of ashlar stone and brick shape the exterior walls. The men’s section presents a portico beneath a central dome, an unusual feature that gives the building a mosque-like appearance. A golden inscription on green ground and a decorative palmette mark the entrance. Inside, each section contains a changing room, a cool room, and a hot room.

Small windows pierce the domes, bringing subdued light into the hot rooms. Central marble göbek taşı tables give those spaces their defining bathing detail. Major restorations took place in the early twentieth century and again in the early 2000s.
