Museum im Römerbad lies beneath a parking garage in Heidenheim an der Brenz, about three metres below today’s street level. Walkways lead you directly among the walls of a monumental Roman building, while entrance-rotunda windows reveal a smaller bathhouse. A sound and light presentation introduces archaeological finds from the surrounding area.

The remains belong to Aquileia, a Roman settlement that grew beside the Brenz where seven roads met. In the early second century, a thousand-strong mounted unit built a 5.5-hectare fort nearby, and the civilian settlement became an important military and administrative centre in the province of Raetia. Archaeological work in the 1980s and 1990s shifted the building’s interpretation from a large bathhouse towards a representative residence for a senior administrator.

A reproduction of the Tabula Peutingeriana occupies the entrance rotunda, showing Heidenheim as a meeting point of several Roman routes. The exhibition connects that map with daily life in a border province roughly 1,900 years ago.
