Marienkirche stands in the heart of Heidenheim an der Brenz as a Catholic church and community gathering place. The foundation stone was laid in 1882, and Bishop Dr. Joh Bapt Sproll consecrated it in 1887. It became the first Catholic church built in Heidenheim after the Reformation, with 350 seats for 453 local Catholics.

Population growth brought a major expansion in 1932 under Stuttgart architect Hugo Schlösser. The work extended the building north and south, enlarged the choir, lengthened the nave and aisles, and widened the tower. A further choir redesign in 1971 replaced the high altar with a wooden Christ torso from the 13th century. Burkhart’s paintings of Mary’s joys and his 1935 Stations of the Cross add further detail to the interior.

Near the tabernacle, a Madonna stands alongside a statue of Saint Odilia. Three restored stone sculptures of Mary, Peter, and Paul mark the exterior after its 1982 renovation. Gerhard Schmid’s 1974 organ has 41 registers and three manuals, with a setter system added in 2001.
